Dr. George E. Thornton, Sr., is an educational leader, administrator, and ordained minister. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He holds a B.A. in Religion and History from Andrews University, and he’s a product of Oakwood University. He further earned a Master’s in Urban Studies and a Doctorate in Divinity, Contemporary Theology & Social Gospel, both from Norfolk Theological Seminary and College, and a Master of Science degree, Educational Leadership, from Saint Joseph’s University.
Dr. Thornton is a dynamic leader with a deep commitment and a proponent of Christian Education, the Preaching of the Gospel, and Pastoral Ministry. As a progressive educator, a prolific preacher, a visionary pastor and teacher; Dr. Thornton has done considerable research and lectures in the area of evolving challenges of Black college students, especially among Black males. Dr. Thornton presents before countless thousands of people each year in the U.S. and globally on leadership, inspirational messages, and critical issues/ emerging trends in education. Dr. Thornton is blessed with the rare ability to weave timeless inspirations that are grounded in biblical truths to diverse audiences. His preaching is considered “R” Rated: Real, Relevant and Redemptive. He has a deep passion and bent toward reaching the “Millennial’s “generation, who are so often misunderstood and labeled as anti-church.
Formerly, Dr. Thornton served as Headmaster at Pine Forge Academy, as well as Pastor of various churches and teacher in the Allegheny East Conference. He also served as an educator in the Public School System.
Within Higher Education, Dr. Thornton served as Associate Professor of Liberal Arts and Social Science and the Dean of Student Affairs at Harcum College, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. Under his leadership, the College experienced its highest enrollment; several new initiatives and partnerships were created and forged in advancing the College’s mission and developing opportunities for student achievement and educational success.
In June, 2018, Dr. Thornton will end his 3-year tenure, serving as Principal of the Dupont Park Adventist School, in Washington, DC... The School with the Eternal Advantage! It is the ONLY Seventh-Day Adventist School in our Nation’s Capital.
As of July 1st, 2018, Dr. Thornton has been assigned as the Senior Pastor of the historic Magazine Street SDA Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, of the South Central Conference.
Dr. Thornton is a member of National Honor Society (ALPHA EPSILON LAMBA) Omega Chapter (Saint Joseph’s University). He is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, Delta, Delta Chapter, Baltimore, Maryland. He has served on various Community Boards and Civic Organizations.
Dr. Thornton and his wife Carolyn are the parents of three young adults.
